Ultrasound Bone Density Testing - The New Era

The new era of ultrasound can be used confidently to predict fracture risk in both men and women. Early assessment will encourage prevention of bone loss, maintenance of normal bone quality and reduction in future fracture risk. Bone Ultrasonometry has developed over the last ten years as a sophisticated method for assessment of bone quality that is well accepted in many countries. There are currently more than 8000 ultrasonometers installed worldwide.

Service offered

We offer portable bone density screening which means that we come to you. The screening technique employed is QUS (quantitative ultrasound scan) and there is no ionising radiation. The more widely used DEXA technique uses ionising radiation, is not portable and is also far more expensive costing over R1000. The screening we offer costs R300 and may be reclaimed from medical aid. The test takes approximately 10 – 15min and can be carried out at your office/ desired location.

Technology used

The technology used is FDA approved and has many trial studies, one of which has been published in the Journal of Bone Mineral Research in August 2013.
